How to be a Master of your Thoughts

Well, first and foremost you really want to be a master and not a slave! Half baked perseverance won’t take you anywhere.

When I first started writing this blog, I was wondering what are the things that I should be writing about. In my head there were a host of things, but out of all of them, there are 3 techniques which have never failed me in any situation. I am sure you will find them useful too!

I call them ‘techniques’ because it is a science which will work in any situation, if you apply them as is! Let us go through them together.

What is exactly happening when there are too many thoughts running? Every thought has an associated emotion. As the thought race is happening in your head, there is an emotional hijack happening simultaneously. ( And this could possibly be the expression of your thoughts 😈!) If a train of negative thoughts is running in your head, the negative emotions associated with the thoughts such as fear, anger, frustration hijack all your positive / neutral emotions. Your ability to think rationally comes down rapidly. When this happens, your actions are purely driven by negative emotions and you are thrown off- balance ! You can imagine the result of the decisions taken in this frame of mind.

If you do not want this to happen, then there are 3 things that you can do, that lie within your control.

Take the driver’s seat

What do you do when your car is speeding much above your desired speed rate? You consciously slow down! You can do this because you are the one sitting on the driver’s seat. Had you been a passenger in the drive, you would have had less control on the situation. Same is the case with your thoughts. The thoughts are being generated in YOUR head, which means you are the only one who can consciously take charge and do something about it. Once you take this step, 50% of the battle is won! The intent is established! If this is not done, you will just be swaying in any direction that the situation or the thought takes you towards.

Razor sharp focus

Shift your focus entirely from your thoughts to what needs to be done in the current situation. Channelise all your energies from the thoughts to the desired action. Once the negative thought becomes an empty bag with no energy to fuel it, it will automatically redirect itself to support you in your actions. With this you come 25% more closer to being a master. If this is not done, you will be watering your negative thoughts to grow and flourish and eventually it gets the better of you.

Drop the baggage

It is important that you do not carry any accumulated weight of the previous thoughts. Imagine yourself as physically carrying the weight of your thoughts. If you do not drop the baggage , it will become more and more difficult for you to keep walking with the weight. Treat every day, every moment fresh as it comes. With this, you cover the last 25% of your journey to becoming a master.
